The island of Corfu is one of the worlds most popular holiday destinations. It is the second largest island in the Ionian Sea, and the northernmost of the seven islands. It is rich in history, with Venetian buildings, neoclassical architecture, spacious town squares and picturesque narrow streets – all transporting the visitor back to a world gone by.
Sights
All across the island the visitor will find beautiful churches and monasteries, the most famous of them all the Church of Zoodochou Pigis at Palaiokastritsa. Other sights to visit include the Achilleio (the palace of Princess Sissy of Austria) at Gastouri, the Kaiser¢s Bridge at Benitses and the famous Pontikonisi.
The town of Corfu is full of wonderful historical monuments, such as the Kanoni gun emplacement, the New and Old Forts, Spianada Square with its historic buildings and the Liston, not to mention the three museums – Archaeological, Byzantine and Museum of Asiatic art.
Beaches
Corfu is renowned for its wonderful beaches. Among the most impressive are those at Barbati, Dasia and Ipsos, on the eastern coast, and Agios Gordios and Glyfada on the western side of the island.
On the northern and north-western coast you will find the beaches of Palaiokastritsa, Arilla, Agios Georgios, Sidari, Peroulades and Roda, while on the southern and south-eastern side of the island are the beaches of Issos, Agios Georgios and Halikounas.
